The stats are out. This year 41,000 real estate licensed agents dropped out of the business in Florida since the boom days when everyone and their mother, aunt, sister, brother neighbor was an agent. Just in the state of Florida. 
That is a lot of agents!
In the boom year of 2005 there were 144,174 agents.
That was up from just 118,092 in 2004. In the year 2000 there were

These stats are for the state of Florida but I believe that they are going to be similar throughout most of the states.
The average Realtor® in 2009 in the state of Florida:
- Closed 8 transactions in 2009
- 56% of the Realtors® in Florida are women.
- 81% specialize in residential sales.
- 2/3 of the agents have websites.
- Half of the agents use social media.
- 1 out of 10 agents say they have a blog. ( But do they blog?)
- The median gross income of an agent was $34,400.
- The average agent is 54 year...
